Five Chicago Cubs players are among the leaders for the National League in the latest 2016 All-Star Game balloting totals released Wednesday by Major League Baseball, joining three Kansas City Royals and three Boston Red Sox among the American League leaders announced Tuesday.
With two weeks of fan voting remaining, the top four spots in the NL are occupied by Cubs—Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist, Kris Bryant, and Dexter Fowler—with Bryce Harper of the Nationals and Yoenis Céspedes of the Mets following closely behind in the race for the top vote-getter. In the AL, David Ortiz and Salvador Pérez have become the first two players to eclipse two million votes.
Currently, there are only two closely contested races: In the NL, catcher Yadier Molina is edging out Buster Posey, and in the AL, four players are vying for the third outfield spot, where Lorenzo Cain holds a slim lead over Mark Trumbo, Mookie Betts, and José Bautista.
Nevertheless, history has shown that results can change dramatically in the final weeks of voting, due to the number of votes that are cast, so it’s likely that we’ll see at least a few different leaders by the time that voting ends. Last year, Toronto’s Josh Donaldson set a record with 14,090,188, or roughly seven times the number of votes that David Ortiz currently has.
Here is a complete list of the current leaders for each position:
